Some
Women
In
June of 2000 I released my own CD called
"Some
Women"
on my Web site. I say "released," but that's kind of a
stretch of terminology. I had been working on it for about
two years and found, upon finishing the CD, that I wasn't
really willing to shop it anywhere. Not that I wasn't proud
of it. On the contrary, I love it. I'm just not comfortable
representing myself as an artist, and find it to be very
awkward. "Blowing your own horn" can be a difficult thing.
Just the same, I am committed to writing and recording my
own music. Clearly, I could use some representation.
Hopefully the merit of my music will spread and win many
hearts. I'm a music man, but not very good at the business
of music. The CD is available
at
the Artist
Launch
web site.
I love being in 3 Dog Night -- that should be obvious by
now. Nothing would make me happier than for us to do some
more of my material. Choosing songs is a very personal thing
for the vocalist, and I can't get upset if "my thang" is not
particularly "their thang." Personally, I'm not sure I could
even define what "my thang" is. My career has been flooded
with so many different styles of songs, due to the structure
of our band, that it has been a wonderful environment for
interpreting and performing different "bags." Truly an
amazing experience that I'll be forever thankful for. Maybe
we will find common ground in the future and I'll write
something that tickles a spot for the band. When someone is
as excited about their creations as I was, it can get a bit
thick. The only way I know to write is to completely fall in
love with each song. It's how the song speaks back, telling
me what it needs during the creative process. It's a very
intimate thing ... if one can be intimate with one's self.
(Let's not
go there. Sounds a little kinky to me.) The
3 Dog Night philosophy (and
it's a good one)
is: When
picking a song to record, each song has to stand on its own
merits.
It's that simple, and I agree completely. There's no other
place I would rather be than right here in 3 Dog Night. It
is home, and these are my brothers. They just happen to be
very talented brothers who assert their personal initiative
when it's recording time. I've
been asked a few times to put a large screen version of the
"Some Women" CD pamphlet on my Web site so that it would be
easier to read the lyrics. This seems like a good place to
do it. The words had to be printed so little that it was
extremely hard to read the lyrics without a magnifying
glass. This should be a lot better. Yes, I miss the old
album days with the large graphic layouts. Personally, I
feel that lyrics weren't intended to be just read. Some
lyrics come off a bit "hokey" when read alone, and a great
poem rarely makes good lyrics, but then ... you know all
that stuff. To view the individual pages of the CD pamphlet,
just click on a guitar pick below. (Return
