Paul Kingery: The Bands

Below in 1967: Paul in a high school band called, "The Stuart Avery Assemblage," which was shortened to "S.A.A." and later changed to "Assemblage." All the same band with most, but not all, of the same members. Stuart Avery (Goldbaum) was the singer of the band [Mick Jagger style], and he owned the PA that they used when rehearsing in his basement. Paul says, "His parents were very cool about it." "Assemblage" played a lot at the Grande Ballroom (Detroit), opening for the Yardbirds, Spirit, Fever Tree, Spooky Tooth, The McCoys [Rick Derringer], and they appear on many collector's art posters. "Assemblage" later had an album (simply titled, "Assemblage") on Westbound records with a soul/rock reworked version of the Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." which became a top ten regional single. Paul co-wrote four songs on that album.

Above left: Paul with Assemblage. Below: Paul in a publicity picture with the group "Stretch Thomas." Stretch Thomas was a band formed around Paul as "Stretch," a solo artist managed by Punch Andrews of Bob Seger fame. The name "Stretch Thomas" was a double take on a TV character named "Stretch" from "Sanford and Son" and the clock maker, Seth Thomas, whose clocks were in nearly every school and office building. Paul has had a wonderful career, and I'm proud to have him in the band. We all work well together on stage, sharing a style of "ignorant humor" that translates into "fun" during our performances.
